I Was Only 19

I Was Only 19

Three Screen Video Installation, 2016

On the 17th August, 2016, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the tragic battle of Long Tan, John Schumann, along with Hugh McDonald, played their ballad of loss 'I Was Only 19' in a closed ceremony in the Hall of Remembrance for 108 Vietnam Veterans.

Commissioned by the War Memorial to create a video installation work based around this event, filmmaker Rhys Graham created a three screen video work that captured this extraordinary, intimate experience while interweaving it with portraits of the veterans and hushed recitations of the text of Schumann's classic song.
